Douane Eddy

Words: Boris Bergman
Music: Alain Bashung

In 2009, the website "Monsieur Bashung" had a great holiday post, "Joyeux Nobel", with "Douane Eddy". They have a podcast.  While you're there, explore the many creative posts and photoshopped Bashung pics on this great website that does a lot of french winking! (Sorry about the old Jiwa site links on the other posts that no longer work--damn it! I will figure out what to do about listening to songs without videos. Maybe we'll all just have to go to our cds, less convenient but utterly legit.) Happy New Year. ~LT

Elle passe la douane avec Eddy*
She is passing through customs with Eddy
Par un bel après-midi
On a beautiful afternoon
I'm burning a candle in Saint Denis, thanks in advance
I'm dreaming so high on a grand scale
Depuis que le pompier casque
Since the fireman's taking the rap
Pas de nouvelle, nouvelle vague
No news, new wave
L'année dernière à marée basse
Last year at low tide

She rained so much that she's still all wet
Elle est encore toute mouillée
She's still all wet
Tellement beaucoup qu'elle a plu
She rained so much
Galope, galope
Gallop, gallop
Galope, galope
Gallop, gallop

Mistinguette, Mitchum, mi-raisin
Little miss, Mitchum, half-grape
Les yeux fermés j'achète
I'm buying with closed eyes
In spite of the french cancan, I'm making kilometers
Elle m'a plaqué or
She pins me down with gold
Pas de Cartier dans le quartier
Not the Cartier of the neighborhood
The escalators are they really what they were ?

She rained so much that she's still all wet
Elle est encore toute mouillée
She's still all wet
Tellement beaucoup qu'elle a plu
She rained so much
Galope, galope
Gallop, gallop
Galope, galope
Gallop, gallop

Elle passe la douane avec Eddy
She is passing through customs with Eddy
Je prends soin du canari
She takes care of the canary
I drown the red fish two times a day
Il te reste fidèle
I'm staying faithful to you
Joyeux Nobel et encore bananier
Happy Nobel and still banana
I'm canceling the manicure, this will toughen her up

She rained so much that she's still all wet
Elle est encore toute mouillée
She's still all wet
Tellement beaucoup qu'elle a plu
She rained so much
Galope, galope
Gallop, gallop
Galope, galope
Gallop, gallop

Elle passe la douane avec Eddy
She's passing through customs with Eddy

Malédiction

Words: Boris Bergman
Music: Alain Bashung

Tu additionnes tu multiplies les petits câlins anonymes
You add up you multiply the little anonymous cuddles

And the gun cartridges very gently very gently

If you knew what must be said to grease the machine

I switch myself on and pass to manual
Sur tes lèvres comme un lipsus

On your lips like a lipsus*

And you caress your personnel to keep the maids from gossiping
Laisse pas tomber comme ça l'épine

Don't let your spine fall like that
Ca f'rait trop de peine à Rose

It will cause too much anguish for Rose

Why is it necessary, big shot, for the magician to dose ?

I turn myself on and pass to manual
Sur tes lèvres comme un lipsus

On your lips like a lipsus

The porters will go no lion, no further
Dr Livingstone le sait bien, lui le sait bien

Dr. Livingstone knows it well, he knows it well
Malédiction, malédiction, tous en scène

Malediction, malediction, everyone on stage

We will not leave this island of dreams
Sans jeter un dernier regard

Without looking behind us

To rosy up our home or eat in

I turn myself on and pass to manual
Sur tes lèvres comme un lipsus

On your lips like a lipsus

* I couldn't find a definition for "lipsus" but I did find this funny comment on the blog "Blog Up": "Reste une interrogation. Entre lapsus et Lipstick, que signifie ce lipsus qui clôt la chanson « Malédiction » ? // There remains an interrogative. Between lapsus and Lipstick, what signifies this lipsus that concludes the song 'Malédiction'?" (http://blogup.canalblog.com/archives/p180-10.html)

L'Arrivée du tour

Words: Boris Bergman
Music: Alain Bashung

Note: This is my first attempt to make a Bashung/Bergman song singable in English. Consequently, I've added and subtracted a few words... Here's a simple accapella demonstration of the meter, stress, etc. This is not a performance demo! :>>)))

L'arrivée du tour... in English!

A genoux les majorettes
On your knees, majorettes
Ces demoiselles au parloir
These young ladies of the parlor
Sonnez résonnez musette
Sound off, hum, accordionettes
À nous deux la victoire
To us two goes the triumph
Loin les cul-de-jatte ça court les rues
Far away the legless run the streets
À la poursuite du Mongol sans but
In pursuit of the wayward idiot
Non, y'a pas le feu au Q.G.
No, there's no fire in GQ (General Quarters)
Non, y'a pas le feu au Q.G.
No, there's no fire in GQ Le feu au Q.G.
No fire in GQ

Ce n'est qu'un arrosoir
It's just a watering can
Un tomahawk sur l'armoire
A tomahawk on the armoire
Whatcha doing but you're screwin' Hamburg
Not at all, it's arrival of the tour

Bains de minuit, midinettes
Baths at midnight with babettes
Rendez-vous les séchoirs
Rendez-vous with a clothes dryer
Astiquez baïonnettes
Polish up those bayonettes
Vous qui passez sans m'avoir
I'm not here if they inquire
Suis trop pompé pour le César
I'm too pumped up to accept the award
Smoking fumé fin de non-recevoir
Smoked smoking, finish by refusing (smoking jacket)
Non, y'a pas le feu au Q.G.
No, there's no fire in GQ
Non, y'a pas le feu au Q.G.
No, there's no fire in GQ
La garde mobile (wordplay: gare de mobile)
It's a parking lot

Ce n'est qu'un arrosoir
It's just a watering can
Un tomahawk sur l'armoire
A tomahawk on the armoire
Whatcha doing but you're screwin' Hamburg
Not at all, it's arrival of the tour

Everything's so clarinet (play on "neat" and "clean")
Laissez-moi faire un canard
Just let me keep my mouth shut
Cuisine-moi kitsch et net (wordplay: kitchenette)
Cook me nicely kichenette (and with wordplay, kitch et clean)
C'est la fée du hasard
It's the fairy of hazard
Ouvrez, ouvrez la charentaise
Open, open, furry li'l slipper
Touche me, pompom, and you'll have a rich rhyme
Non, y'a pas le feu au Q.G.
No, there's no fire in GQ
Non, y'a pas le feu au Q.G.
No, there's no fire in GQ
La garde mobile
Call the national guard!

Ce n'est qu'un arrosoir
It's just a watering can
Un tomahawk sur l'armoire
A tomahawk on the armoire
Whatcha doing but you're screwin' Hamburg
Not at all, it's just arrival of the tour

Herr Major

by Boris Bergman/ Alain Bashung

Pas les yeux dans les poches
Don't cast your eyes in your pockets
Il revient le temps du muguet
The time of lily of the valley will come back
Pas les yeux dans les poches
Don't cast your eyes in your pockets
Avec les moutons y'a pas de mai y'a pas de mai ...
With sheep there's no May, there's no May ...

L'anguille est sous la roche
There's an eel under the rock (I smell a rat)
I have all their names in my notebook, everything's there
Antony and Cleopatre met again, I knew it

Herr Major encore
Herr Major again
À vue d'oeil on s'améliore
At first glance one feels better
Herr Major, encore, one more
Herr Major, again, one more
L'ambiance est au pressing
The ambiance is at the cleaners
Ma petite amie est vache
My girlfriend is a cow
Elle joue du cor dès qu'elle se lève très à l'aise
She plays a horn when she leisurely gets up
Et ses parties de chasse
And her hunting parties
My pee-pee, I grant it to you stiff, on a tightrope

L'anguille est sous la roche
The eel is under the rock (I smell a rat)
The enemy has cloaked the sheik
Vive la fraise
Long live the double breasted
On a repris le pont d'Arcole
We retook the Arcole bridge
La guêpière en plein vol, pas folle
Bustier in full flight, not crazy

Frau Major nous cajole
Frau Major cajoles us
Deux ou trois heures de colle
Two or three hours glued together
Je raffole
I'm panicked

Herr Major encore
Herr Major again
A vue d'oeil on s'améliore
At first glance, one feels better
Herr Major, encore, one more
Herr Major, again, one more

L'ambiance est au pressing
The ambiance is at the cleaners
Zoé paye la note du jazz
Zoey pays the jazz note
Tout se passe comme prévu
Everything happens as imagined
L'oncle Tom recule de deux cases
Uncle Tom recoils from two cases
Il a Zoé éperdue, perdue
He has Zoey distraught, lost

Herr Major encore
Herr Major again
À vue d'oeil on s'améliore
At first glance, one feels better
Herr Major, encore, one more
Herr Major, again, one more

L'ambiance est au pressing
The ambiance is at the cleaners
Pas de sous dans les poches
Not a penny in our pockets

Milady

Words: Boris Bergman
Music: Alain Bashung

Sound file: http://oldisound.musicblog.fr/1532468/Alain-Bashung-Milady-1986/

Je l'ai pas dit Milady
I didn't call her Milady
J 'en ai soufflé qu'à ma bougie
I only blew on my candle
Ainsi font les petits cui-cui
Thus go the little tweet-tweets
Servis chauds à Nagasaki
Served hot in Nagasaki
I marry it's for the whole night
Y'a la traîne, ça me ralentit
There's lagging, it slows me

I am less beautiful with a Lady, beautiful with a Lady
Ca se vérifie, ça s'étudie
It's been verfied, it's been studied
Qu'est-ce que j'ai dit, qu'est-ce que j'ai dit
what did i say, what did I say

Cantonnées à Paris
Confined to Paris
Il arrive que les chinoises rient
It happens that the Chinese are laughing
Au charbon les amis
Off to our hard work, friends
Petit ramoneur je te suis
Little chimney sweep that I am I follow you

I am less beautiful with a Lady, beautiful with a Lady
Ca se vérifie, ça s'étudie
It's been verified, it's been studied
Qu'est-ce que j'ai dit, qu'est-ce que j'ai dit
What did i say, what did i say

Brûlez vos clafoutis
Burn your cherry pies
La brigade du vice a sévi
The vice squad has run wild
Un coup j'avoue, un coup je nie
One blow I avow, one blow I deny
C'est tout ce que tu as pour un penny
That's all you can get for a penny

I'm less beautiful with a Lady, beautiful with a Lady
Rectification il faisait nuit
Rectification it's night time
L'homme des tavernes avait un alibi
The man of the taverns had an alibi
