Les grands voyageurs

Words: Jean Fauque and Laurent Petitgand
Music: Alain Bashung

Les grands voyageurs
The great voyagers
Laissent dans le cœur des ardoises
Leave in their hearts the accounts
Les grands voyageurs
The great voyagers
Laissent les tuiles aux Tuileries
Leave the tiles in the Tuileries
Cherchent des amuse-gueule au buffet de la gare
Look for snacks on the buffet of the train station
Trouvent des femmes seules pour hommes affamés
Find lonely women for starving men

À quatre pattes
On all fours
À quatre pattes
On all fours
Intacts
Intacts

Les grands voyageurs
The great voyagers
Se posent sur le ventre d'une âme sœur
Are poised on the stomach of a soulmate
Ne respectent pas les consignes
Don't respect the goods
Ne font pas de cadeau
Don't make presents
Sinon des solitaires à des égéries en souffrance
If not solitary ones for suffering muses

Les grands voyageurs
The great voyagers
Vous donnent la migraine
Give you a migraine
Avec des récits captivants
With capivating stories

À quatre pattes
On all fours
À quatre pattes
On all fours
Intacts
Intact

De la cabine où je t'appelle
From the booth where I call you
On distingue
One distinguishes
Des crépuscules en toc
Two-bit twilights
Des bruits d'hélice
Noise of propellers
De la musique d'ascenseur
Elevator music
Pour femmes seules
For lonely women
Pour hommes affamés
For starving men
Et le vermisseau qui t'appelle ruisselle ruisselle
And small worms that call to you drip drip

À quatre pattes
On all fours
À quatre pattes
On all fours
Intacts
Intact
Intacts
Intact

Hello Laura,
I came across your blog a some months ago when I was searching for some Bashung's lyrics. I can say that I adore almost each one of his songs but unfortunately my poor French don't help me to understand him at the depth that I would like. Your blog was, is and I hope it will remain a wonderful surprise to me, with your translation and help I can finally feel Bashung's words and not only his voice and his music. Keep up the good work, it is a great resource for all of us who appreciate Bashung's work but are not francophones. Greetings from Greece.

P.S.1 I wanted to leave this comment months ago just to encourage you and inform you that you are not alone out here! :)

P.S.2 My outmost favorite song is La Nuit, Je Mens, and this song is the reason why I am here now.

vassilis, thank you so much for your warm words and encouragement. it is exactly for you that i am doing this work because i know what it is to appreciate bashung but not understand the lyrics. not being french, i too am often surprised when i get the words in front of me and realize that i've been singing my own variation of many songs. (my eye is better at french than my ear.) :>>))

"la nuit je mens" is a masterpiece. check out this video by the artist c. will who interpreted the song with his own depictions of bashung: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zJyKZ6Ejao
