Alcaline

Words: Boris Bergman
Music: Alain Bashung

Thank you to Alain Watelle for his excellent ear and sage advice!

Si tu veux j'peux t'aider
If you want I can help you
Ca m'a l'air un peu lourd à porter
This seems a little heavy to carry
Sûr, t’as rien oublié ?
Sure you haven't forgotten anything?
Les bateaux que tu me démontais
The boats that you dismantled

En vertu des rasoirs
By virtue of razors
Tu viens couper court à notre histoire
You've just cut short our history
À tiroirs
Into episodes

Dehors l’incandescence
Outside the incandescence
N'approuve que les larmes d'un sampler
Only a sampling of teardrops shows
J’veux tout réécouter
I want to listen to everything again
Vaguement brisé
Vaguely broken (vague=wave)
Sur une plage alcaline
On an alkaline beach

Où veux-tu que j'te dépose ?
Where do you want me to drop you off?
Tu m’as encore rien dit
You've still told me nothing
T'aimes plus les mots roses
Don't you like the rosy words anymore
Que je t'écris ?
That I write for you?

J'aimais ta géométrie
I loved your geometry
Exacerbée d'une pensée profonde
Exacerbated by a deep thought
À tourner l’dos au soleil
To turn our backs on the sun
On n’est pas pour ça plus fort en ombre
Doesn't give us any more shade

Décor décortiqués
Decorticated decors
Reconstitué
Reconstituted
Sur une plage alcaline
On an alkaline beach

Où veux-tu que j’te dépose ?
Where do you want me to drop you off ?
Tu m'as encore rien dit
You've still told me nothing
T’aimes plus les mots roses
Don't you love the rosy words anymore
Que je t'écris ?
That I write for you?

Comme l’anaconda aime à se griser au
Like an anaconda loves to get drunk
Temple d'Angkor
in the Temple of Angkora
Des cotillons, il nous en faudrait encore
Cotillions, would we still need them
Plus des confettis
Just more confetti!

Où veux-tu que j’te dépose ?
Where do you want me to drop you off ?
Tu m'as encore rien dit
You've still told me nothing
T’aimes plus les mots roses
Don't you like the rosy words anymore
Que je t'écris ?
That I write for you?

From the Nouvel Observateur, March 19, 2009:

Reunited by the "Nouvel Observateur", Bashung revealed to him, whom he called "the blond Gitan", the secret of his song "Alcaline": "I wrote it thinking about you. In 'Alcaline', there is 'Aline' (a song by Christophe). This was to to tell you that I loved you from afar. "You've still told me nothing/ Don't you love my rosy words anymore/ that I write you ?", it was a response to your "Mots bleus" (Blue Words). ~François Armanet
