Jamais d'autre que toi

Photo:

Poem: Robert Desnos
Musique: Alain Bashung/Ludovic Bource/Jean Lamoot

(Note: Due to the lack of punctuation in the poem and the placement of the adjectives, many adjectives in Desnos' poem have two functions, such as adjective and verb, or can apply to two different nouns.)

Never any other but you in spite of the stars and the lonely places

In spite of the mutilation of the trees at nightfall

Never any other but you will pursue his path which is mine

The more you distance yourself and the more your shadow grows

Never any other but you will greet the sea at dawn when tired of aimless wandering me who has come out of the dark forests and nettle bushes I will walk towards the foam

Never any other but you will pose his hand on my forehead and my eyes

Never any other but you and I deny the lie and the infidelity

This ship at anchor you can cut its cord
Jamais d'autre que toi

Never any other but you

The eagle prisoner in a cage slowly naws the bars of green-blue oxydized copper
Quelle évasion !
What an escape!
It is Sunday marked by the chant of the nightingales in the woods of (tender) green to tender the boredom of young girls in the presence of a cage where a canary is restless while on the road solitary the sun slowly displaces its thin line on the hot sidewalk
Nous passerons d'autres lignes

We will cross other lines
Jamais jamais d'autre que toi

Never never any other but you

And me alone alone alone like the faded ivy in the suburban gardens alone like glass
Et toi jamais d'autre que toi

And you never any other but you

i think it's quite hard to adapt a poem to make a song out of it but here it works well.
i also recommend the song "Des armes" by the french band Noir Désir.
And there are so many other talented artists dealing with poetry all over the world: Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, etc
